Service Guide
A Driving Licence in India is generally valid for 20 years or until the holder turns 40 years of age, whichever is earlier. It is crucial to renew your DL before it expires. Driving with an expired licence attracts a fine of ₹5,000. Through the Parivahan portal, DL renewal is now a completely online, faceless process in most states, provided your Aadhaar is linked.
Important Forms: Form 2 (Application for DL Renewal) and Form 1A (Medical Certificate - mandatory if you are above 40 years old).
Your current Driving Licence number and Date of Birth.
For instant eKYC authentication.
Signed and stamped by a registered MBBS doctor (if aged > 40).
Scanned copies if not using Aadhaar eKYC.
Standard renewal fee is ₹200. Smart Card fee is ₹200. Total: ₹400. Late penalty is ₹300 per year if applied after the grace period.
When uploading Form 1A (Medical Certificate), ensure the doctor's registration number and official seal are clearly visible in the scan. Blurry or unstamped medical forms are the #1 reason for renewal rejections.
In alignment with the recent Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) updates, understanding the granular steps of this service can save you significant time and prevent application rejection. The Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) has mandated strict adherence to digital document verification, meaning that most applications are now processed through the Faceless eKYC route. Let's dive deeper into what this means for you.
Highly recommended. By choosing "Submit via Aadhaar Authentication", your demographic details and photograph are fetched directly from UIDAI. You do not need to visit the RTO physically. Document upload requirements are minimal, and the process is entirely contactless.
If you choose "Submit without Aadhaar Authentication", you must upload scanned copies of your Address Proof, Age Proof, and Passport Photo. Most importantly, you will be required to book an appointment slot and visit the RTO physically for document verification and biometric capture.
Once you submit your application and pay the fee, you will receive an Application Number. You can use the "Application Status" tool on the Sarathi/Vahan portal to track progress. Here is what the status messages mean:
| Scrutiny Level | Your uploaded documents are being verified by the RTO clerk. If any document is illegible, the application will be pushed to 'Pending' status. |
| Approval Level | The RTO Inspector/Officer has approved your application. You have officially passed the hurdles. |
| Printing of Smart Card | Your data has been sent to the printing vendor. The physical plastic Smart Card is being generated. |
| Dispatched via Speed Post | Your document has been mailed to your registered address via India Post. A tracking ID will be provided on the screen. |
Remember that RTO rules are governed at the state level under the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR). Specific procedures for things like High Security Registration Plate (HSRP) mandates, road tax slabs, or even localized driving test tracks vary significantly between states like Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Delhi, and Karnataka. Always refer to your state-specific RTO notifications if you encounter anomalies during the online process.
| Issue Encountered | How to Fix It |
|---|---|
| Payment Deducted but Status Pending | Do NOT pay again immediately. Wait 45 minutes and use the "Verify Payment Status" tool on the portal. |
| Aadhaar OTP Not Received | Ensure your mobile network is clear. Check if your current number is linked to Aadhaar via the UIDAI portal. |
| Document Verification Failed | Re-upload the document ensuring it is not blurry. If rejected again, you may need to visit the RTO for manual verification. |
Beware of Fraud: Parivahan Sewa services are strictly digital. Do not share your OTP, Application Number, or personal details with unauthorized agents promising faster processing. The official fees are transparent and listed directly on the portal. Always verify challans on the official echallan.parivahan.gov.in website before making any payments.
| Issue | Solution |
|---|---|
| DL details not found on Sarathi portal when entering DL number | Try entering the DL number in different formats (with and without state code, with/without hyphens). Older DLs from before 2000 may not be fully digitized. Visit the issuing RTO with your physical DL for data entry. |
| Application rejected due to expired medical certificate | Get a fresh Form 1/1A from any MBBS-registered doctor. It must be dated within 1 month of your application. Re-upload and resubmit the application — a new payment is not needed if the rejection is within the same session. |
| Renewed DL not received even after 45 days | Check the India Post tracking number on the Sarathi portal. If it shows "Undelivered/Returned", visit the RTO with your application number to collect it in person or request re-dispatch to a corrected address. |
| DL shows wrong photo or name on the renewed card | Raise a grievance on the Sarathi portal immediately. Carry both the wrongly printed card and the old DL to the RTO. A correction is processed free of cost within the correction period. |
